Jobin Jose, Mesa 57 - The Desk. Plugged In. (TABLES, CHAIRS, DESKS 2021 )
Mesa 57 is a mid-century modern desk that plugs in. It was created out of a want for a better desk that could power devices and organise cables whilst using sustainably sourced hardwoods. The desk has a unique push down hatch to allow ergonomic access to 8 power outlets and 2 USB ports in the compartment below. The hatch has been designed with 2 deep bevels to allow passage of cables when closed. The compartment is made from 2 pack painted engineered wood and contains custom laser cut, powder coated, aluminium brackets to organise cables and prevent them interfering with the movement of the hatch. The brackets are fastened with brass screws onto Vic Ash blocks matching the desk’s stain. The desk can also be optioned with a built-in wireless charger and handmade magnetic hooks that attach to an inset metal strip on the underside of the desk. Constructed using modern and traditional techniques and made from Vic Ash; the legs are tapered and have routed grooves on their rear faces made to push fit the power lead so it neatly exits the table. Prior to lamination of the table top, the access hatch is cut out from the top piece of timber to ensure tight tolerances and grain continuity for a seamless finished surface. The tabletop is then cut on a CNC bed and the desk is hand sanded and sealed in natural oils.
