Tim Quirk, Megalong Valley Hall Table (Student)

Inspiration came from the natural landscape of the magnificent Megalong Valley in the Blue Mountains whilst viewing it from a lookout at Medlow Bath. This piece was made from Australian red cedar and northern silky oak. The Australian red cedar shopsawn veneers were cut from a 38mm thick board to ensure the figure matched on each component of the table. The substrate was marine ply for the top and base, and bending ply for the legs which were curved laminations formed in the vacuum press. The northern silky oak lippings on the legs were steam bent. The junction piece joining the legs and base was coved on the table saw then split in half and reversed with the radius matching the end mouldings on the base. Stainless steel rods (8mm) were used to strengthen the joint between the legs and the base. Jigs were made for each process involved in the build to enable me to reproduce this piece. To finish I sprayed the table with nitrocellulose semi gloss lacquer. Dimensions 1450mm L, 840mm H, 300mm D.
