Garry Paynting, Marking Gauges (Art & Accessories)

For the past 47 years I have been a cabinetmaker and have always had a strong association and appreciation of hand tools, associated companies and makers of fine woodworking tools. Over the years I have made numerous hand tools and for this competition I would like to submit my recent batch of three marking gauges, using a combination of Western Australian sheoak and brass. The marking gauges include two scratch marking gauges, and my personal favorite, and one I regularly use, is a cutting gauge using a small high speed steel blade which has been ground and honed with a cutting edge. This cutting gauge will always give a crisp, clean line either with the grain or cross grain. Not only does making the tools gives me great satisfaction but using them to manufacture other tools and to share these experiences and knowledge with fellow woodworkers adds to the achievement.
