Date of making: Oct 2018 till July 2019 Materials used: Sapele mahogany, hoop pine, mahogany veneered plywood, jarrah beading Dimensions: Height 940 Width 1200 Depth 380 Photographer: Andrew Edmondson, Nicholas Cafe (myself) Description: My goal was to produce a Garrett Hack inspired sideboard used as a tall serving table with drawer and door storage for dinnerware. I wanted the design to be pleasing but also functional, incorporated versatility so it could have many lives other than as a traditional tall serving table. These lives and uses could include a display stand in a hall, foyer or bedroom. The hall table's construction incorporated traditional and modern joinery for necessary structural purposes as well as design aesthetics. I also wanted to display my skill with various joinery techniques. Such joinery includes half blind dovetails in drawer construction and frame construction, a floating base to allow for wood movement supported with a floating mortise and tenon joints on the inside. Haunched mortise and tenons in the door frame. Through wedged mortise and tenon joints and pinned mortise and tenon joints in the face frame. Mitered haunched mortise and tenons used in carcase construction. Biscuits used to widen joints for the top. All these joints chosen as best joints to provide structural advantages especially in the doors and carcass construction over more basic domino construction. Design features including hand planed splayed sides and chamfers edge the top then I curved base rail at the front is complemented by the tall four-sided tapered legs create a visually pleasing shape. I also book-matched veneered door panels and combined with mitered jarrah beading on the doors. Year 12, Edmond Rice College Wollongong. Teacher: Andrew Edmondson
