Through the process of designing and constructing the Madea chair, I realised that chairs are not for the faint hearted. My experience taught me that you need to be committed to the journey and expect the unexpected! Not unlike the Greek myth of Jason in search of the golden fleece, I fought my own woodworking battles, learning about ergonomics, compound joinery, rake and splay, jigs, specialist cauls for glue ups, shaping, profiling and finishing. Some weeks the way forward was clear, other weeks presented obstacles that resulted in detours and seemingly backward steps. Nevertheless, I am grateful for the lessons learnt in pursuit of my design ideal. That is, a chair with “good bones”. I chose the angora seat fabric from Kvadrat for its flair and sense of adventure. The rose colour providing a feminine counterbalance to vertical and horizontal lines in the chair and complimenting the figure and hue of the Rock Maple. Madea was a prototype luxury dining chair, but is much favoured by its new owner as a chair to use at her dressing table.
