Noah Le Mahieu, Lowcountry Fantasy (WORLD 2021)

Country
United States of America

The “Lowcountry Fantasy” was my second project at the Charleston Woodworking School. In order to make things more interesting, I incorporated as many challenging elements into this piece as I could throughout the design process. Some of these elements include: curved friction fit drawers with curved bottoms, a 450 piece marquetry design throughout the entire interior, curved door frames, the leg system, and almost a complete lack of 90 degree angles. The exterior of the main case is veneered in cherry, with the interior veneered with various natural and dyed veneers. The door frames, legs, and drawers, are in solid cherry, with maple drawer sides. I designed this piece hoping to portray something that would look like it had come out of the pages of a children’s fantasy story or novel. For the interior marquetry design, I took inspiration from the majestic “Angel Oak” and many other live oak trees native to the South Carolina Lowcountry.
