As a custom furniture maker, I cherish the journey shared with each client. The brief for this was simple. A table to hold some books beside a couch. The journey to bring this piece to life was more complicated. Together we embarked on a dive into the work of Sam Maloof and his joinery techniques. The client’s background as a medical professional provided inspiration for the skeletal form- a nod to bones and life. Photos, conversations, coffee, disappearing down rabbit holes and emerging with a concept where artistry meets utility. Sinuous curves of the legs defying rigidity and inviting movement. The tapered, rhythmic ribs strike a balance between solidity and transparency , cradling knowledge and inviting contemplation. Held together with eight Maloof joints, each carrying memories of the exploration of Sam Maloof’s legacy. The final result is more than a product. It’s a narrative on the experience between client and the maker.
