Damien O'Loughlin, Lisk Floor Lamp (Art & Accessories)

The Lisk Floor Lamp stands just over 2.4m tall and has a span of 1.7m. It is the hero piece in almost any room, providing a beautiful ambient light as well as spot light perfect for reading with on your favourite couch or armchair. The base and lamp pole are made from spotted gum and finished in Osmo Polyx. This lamp shade has been purchased to match the aesthetics of the room that it resides in, however it could easily be swapped out for a different look. The lamp uses a smart globe which allows it to be switched and dimmed via a smartphone from anywhere in the house. The lamp pole is made from eight, 3.6m strips of spotted gum. Five of these strips are initially laminated together to the target curve before a groove is then routed into the centre of the spine to accept and conceal the electrical cable. The pole is then finished by applying the final three laminates and then heading back to the work bench to neaten everything up. Once the pole is finished it is effectively a 3.6m long tenon. A mortise is cut into the circular base at 17 degrees using a router and a custom jig. The overall pole curve and the angled mortise help to throw some weight backward and move the centre of gravity to a position where the lamp can withstand the odd bump and not topple over.
