In designing this lamp I was interested in the interaction of shadow and light. I wanted to create interest in the price it’s self, the light given off but also how the light was hindered. Coming from a career working in the outdoors, there is nothing more captivating then staring into a fire. I endeavoured to create the same feeling with this lamp, inviting the viewer stop and take in flow of the wood, shadow and light. I used American White Ash for the steam bent “flames” and the brick layered hoops. The flaws are fixed to the hoops using Japanese tapered nails which were cut to be left protruding adding another point of interest. The internal brass structure was hand cut and polished and adds rigidity, stopping any spring back. More than anything I loved the problem solving process in exploring this project.
