Hugh Mackay, Kokutan (BOWLS, BOXES 2021)

Small turned and carved box in ebony with Golden Mother of Pearl elements. The inspiration for this piece is buried in my long association with South East Asia and in particular Japan for this piece. Their use of exotic materials, careful attention to detail and cultural forms. It's my attempt here to follow this, using ebony turned and carved. Continuous flowing curves capped by a lid with a sculpted rim and mother of pearl cross, reminiscent of traditional roof lines.
