The inspiration to design and create “Big Chairs” came while looking at the timber rack in the workshop half filled with redgum sourced from five areas across Victoria and New South Wales. The Big Chair idea morphed into a design for a King and Queen Throne. The work scope was to build the Thrones so that they were sculptural as well as practical, had a unique character, and were of a form that people could easily engage with them. The idea of being able to touch, sit down, be photographed, and feel special was appealing. The build was at times challenging not to mention heavy, however, the end-result achieved all that was envisaged in the design brief. An important element of the design concept was to hide any visible joints with special features that fitted in with the Throne theme. Light filtering between the thinner view of the thirteen legs of each Throne boldly pronounces the spheres at the top of the legs, while showing the beautiful grain of the timber in the arm rests. The soaring back is topped with an appropriate crown, the back giving strength and shape representing the difference between the King and Queen Throne. Overall, the rich red grain of the redgum is enhanced by multiple coats of hand rubbed oil finish. Look, Sit, Enjoy the moment.
