The design concept for this piece was to highlight the simplicity and beauty in the unembellished natural wood grain of the Zebrawood, and to contrast this against the complexity and craftsmanship of the Kumiko panels on either end. The goal was to create a beautiful display piece for the kitchen, while also minimising the foot print and providing the functionality and practicality required. Two Kumiko Panels sit within the Zebrawood frame of the knife block. Each of the two panels was created by assembling 39 individually cut and shaped pieces, 78 pieces total. Each piece was hand cut from Radiata Pine, trimmed, and beveled with a variety of angles to allow the interlocking pieces to press fit together to create the final pattern. The main body is put together with hand cut joinery and glue. The Kumiko panels are removable, and sit within the frame with friction fit, as is the assembly of the individual Kumiko elements. This whole piece, along with the rest of my woodwork is made using hand tools only, as this makes me feel closer and more in touch with the wood as I work.
