When I designed my jewellery box I wanted to create a sleek, elegant shape that was anything but square. After numerous sketches I settled on this pointed elliptical shape. Having only four sides, the shape did throw up some interesting problems, such as how was the lid was to open. I did not want any visible hinges, finger grooves or protruding pulls to distract from the overall shape. The box is veneered in ripple sycamore with dyed black 1mm line around the perimeter edges. The jewellery box is raised slightly to accentuate the shape giving the piece a floating appearance. The marquetry is knife cut using dyed veneers and tapered line to a design that further echoes the pointed elliptical shape. It is finished in French polish. The box measures 250mm wide x 240mm depth x 65mm high. The making of the box is now one of the courses I teach at my school.
