Nathan Smith, Japanese Inspired Credenza with Australian Native Hardwood (Student)
My credenza was inspired by my trip to japan where I witnessed a variety of Japanese architectural designs and woodworking around the local areas. These inspired my hand cut kumiko design and the wave of Kanagawa artwork that is featured within the cupboard. My design includes a variety of complex joineries including dovetails for the carcase, bridle and angled halving joints for the base frame, domino / biscuit joinery for division and board widening, finger joints for the drawers and a routed groove for the door panels. The credenza also features a series of routed drawer handles that have been routed to create a groove for a finger pull handle. There are also a series of components that are incorporated including a glass shelf, LED sensor lights and an acrylic laser cut design piece to secure the kumiko to the door. Overall the piece was a great outcome and finished beautifully with a couple of coats of Osmo! School: Mater Maria Catholic College Teacher: Jonathan Beard
