Alessandro Iacovella, Japanese Floating Cabinet (STUDENT 2021)

For my year 12 Major Work, I constructed a Japanese inspired cabinet out of American Dark Walnut and Birdseye Maple. The cabinet carcass has been given the illusion that it is floating, which was inspired by traditional Japanese furniture. The framing of the project was constructed and held together with mortice and tenon joints. The joints for the side rails to connect with the legs consists of through mortice and tenon joints with them remaining proud, consisting of a chamfered edge, adding an elegant but sophisticated look. The drawers have a birdseye maple front consisting of a push to open system installed, lined with a black felt bottom, giving a luxury feel to the project. The doors consist of a Quilted Birdseye Maple veneer hiding the two-levelled shelf behind. I have spent countless hours on the construction of this project, perfecting all the different types of joinery used, improving my skills and knowledge, despite this year being the utmost challenging year of my schooling life battling the covid lockdowns at home. I am overall exceptionally happy with the way the construction of the project has turned out, leaving me with a piece of furniture that is loved my teacher, family, friends and more importantly myself.
