The idea for this coffee table is to create calm, organic, modern atmosphere with a contrast of natural wood colour and black, charred texture. We used two techniques to make this Japandi style Sculpted Coffee table. First one is a stack lamination, a technique in which thick boards of solid wood build up before freely carving them into dynamic shapes. Boards of pine were stuck up and power carved to create organic sculpted shapes. Second technique is shou sugi ban, which involves charring the wood with blow torch. This technique was used in Japan for purpose of weatherproofing wood. The black, charred surface gives rustic, textural design element inside the home. The charred wood wasn’t brushed off, but stabilised and hardened with epoxy resin to keep unique texture. At the same time the epoxy is not covering the coffee table, so you can touch and feel the charred texture without any markings. The surface is strong and durable. The functionality of the design: a big surface area on the top and smaller lower area, which can be used to store items. This coffee table is a beautiful focal point for the living room and suits contemporary interior design.
