Sean Syman, Inward (ART, OBJECTS 2021)
Sometimes we try to retreat and hide away from the world pieces of ourselves that we consider broken. This work represents the beauty and value in these pieces that we may not be able to perceive alone. The void of the hood and the mirror-like surface of the pāua shows how often we can get caught in the infinite space within. The piece is carved from a reclaimed tōtara window sill, with a mosaic of locally gathered pāua lining the interior of the hood. The piece is finished with walnut oil and buffed to a soft shine with a microcrystalline wax polish. It measures 185 x 70 x 45 mm (height x width x depth).
