Luke Meyers, Inlayed and Steambent Coffee Table (Student)
A coffee table featuring an epoxy resin inlay, dovetailed Victorian ash drawers, steambent and laminated curved spotted gum legs, alternating drawer front pattern, raised panels, breadboard end caps that are inlayed. The job was finished with a high gloss, two-part polyurethane. Whilst planning the job, I set parameters in the statement of intent which were: Be appealing and adaptable to suit the room. Have a final cost roughly ≤$700. Have two drawers that feature dovetails and provide a suitable amount of storage. Must not be more than 1200mm in length, 600mm in width, 500mm in height. Must show minimal endgrain. Must be durable as I want it to last my lifetime. Must be constructed from sustainably sourced Australian hardwoods (eucalypts). Must have a durable, hard wearing and spill resistant finish. Must have a contrasting red resin feature in the tabletop. Curved legs. Raised panel. Have two “tiers”. Must incorporate new and emerging technologies such as CAD, laser cutting/engraving and possibly CNC. I managed to meet all of these parameters despite various interruptions throughout the year such as the bushfires in December-February and COVID from March onwards. The project was completed as a HSC Year 12 major work at Bega High School, with teacher Matthew Collins.
