Jessica Vasiliou, Indoor / Outdoor Coffee Table (Student Awards 2019)

My coffee table was constructed from merbau which allows it to be used both indoors and outdoors. It combines strength and durability with functionality and aesthetics. The table which measures 1128mm (L) x 1128 mm (W) x 362 mm (H), has an opening in the centre for a centrepiece such as a plant or a decoration of choice. The design which was inspired by crates, provides ample display/storage space and sets it apart from other coffee tables. Although the construction was repetitive, it was nevertheless challenging. Care had to be taken when aligning the timbers to ensure the joints were flush. To aid this process, masking tape was used to hold the pieces together whilst sash and quick action clamps applied the necessary pressure to ensure the mitred joints were squared. Despite the numerous construction challenges, the end result brought a sense of satisfaction and joy. Year 12, Nazareth College, Vic. Teacher: Christopher Brown
