Brian Dawson, Indian Octagon (TABLES, CHAIRS, DESKS 2021 )
The idea of this octagonal coffee table arose from the beautiful Indian marble inlay which was bought in Rajahstan and lay in our house for a few years waiting for a proper home . It was an ideal starting point for the table In keeping with the Eastern image, I used mainly New Guinea rosewood and carved the eight legs in subtle curves to echo Eastern style The drawers are of Victorian ash , with hand cut dovetails and the knobs are ebony. All the rosewood came in two metre long boards 200mm x 50 mm. I made the table top by cutting 3mm matching veneers The four drawers fit into alternate facets of the eight, leaving a space in the middle ( where the rectangular “secret” drawer lives) and four triangular spaces Only two of the triangular spaces was used for the “secret” drawers The table measures 1200mm x 1200mm overall and is finished with many coats of Danish oil
