The principle design element of this piece, a sunken and a protruding drawer pocket, was inspired by volcanoes and sinkholes. However, the vision was to create a refined and organic aesthetic rather than a rugged one. Whether dormant or active , these landmarks bear evidence of the underlying forces that govern them. The carved fold details evoke a similar sense of motion and elasticity. The construction incorporates mortise and tenon joinery and dovetailed piston fit drawers. The top is rebated into the frame to appear slender. Drawer pulls are identical besides the tip, or endgrain, which is concave and convex on their respective drawers. This subtle detail might be noticed by the pulling action, that calls for a slightly different finger positioning. Made of white oak, drawer sides are maple and drawer bottoms are red cedar.
