This is my first major piece and the inspiration has come about through my time in Japan. I was lucky enough to spend some time there working. The temples/furniture/making skills/designs all amazed me and had a huge impression on me and my life, hence the name. Through this piece I wanted to show what I see in Japanese furniture which is simplicity, beauty, wonder and calm. I wanted the piece to speak for itself. To do this I have kept the woods to a minimum using American Walnut for the majority and then some Maple and Cedar for the drawers, to give a contrast for the half lap dovetails. I also wanted to add in some wonder and calming effects through adding a pattern that has been plannished onto the main doors, this texture and pattern is simple and subtle but catches your eye and brings you further in to touch and feel the piece. I also wanted to add that same texture to the handles so I forged them myself from steel into the handle shape and then beat them to create the texture.
