Elsie Scullard, Huon Pine Carved Rocking horse (Student)
The Huon pine handcarved rocking horse is based on a combination of traditional and contemporary forms. The rocking horse was carved to convey a sense of dignity and power. This was achieved through raising the head in a more forward looking rather than a traditional submissive down cast gaze and positioning the legs in a cantering motion. Huon pine was used as it allowed traditional carving and the opportunity to display the beauty of a natural Australian timber in this form. Jarrah was used to create the stand. This selection created a contrast between the two pieces but allowed the eye to be drawn immediately towards the rocking horse as the focus. The selection of jarrah provided a solid base and allowed strength in the traditional woodturning of the spindle supports. The use of brass and leather hardware and accessories and natural horse hair allowed the rocking horse to be finished to heirloom quality. School: St Johns College Dubbo
