Rebecca Karageorgos, Hungry Wave (ART, OBJECTS 2021)
The Hungry Wave is a sculpture carved from a salvaged ring of gum trunk. It was found by the commissioning customer themselves, in their local area. Rebecca wanted to design a piece that reflected this connection and so crafted an organic creature to bring new life into their home, out of what was once a tall tree nearby. Shaped by a chainsaw, first, before the arbotech mini carver was used to create the intricate dips and curves that follow the dark ochre grain lines of the gum. The back of the body is pulled together into a toothy mouth, to really accentuate the life of this creature. The wood was then detailed with a rotary tool, sanded back and finished with Scandinavian oil. The dripping, glob like form speaks to what Rebecca enjoys most out of woodworking, which is creating a soft textural form out of a hard material. Informed by the intimate process of carving, Rebecca celebrates the inherent beauty of natural materials in this work. It is designed to salute the knobbly and twisted, celebrating movement and evolution.
