Evan Berding, Hinson Desk (WORLD 2021)

While designing this desk to honor the client’s only request - that it incorporate curves - and to have it function in the corner for which it was destined, the dominant shape of the top established itself in my head pretty quickly. Then it was a matter of defining the structure’s form and detail to echo and compliment that shape. I wanted the entire substructure of the desk, all the faces of the case, the drawers and the frame, to repeat, in concentric steps, the shape of the top. I chose to keep the grain of the case (all shop sawn veneers) vertically oriented to accentuate these curves. The drawer faces were bricked, shaped and veneered. I chose the maple burl as both a tonal compliment to the walnut, but also a textural contrast to the straight grain. And the drawers themselves are all dovetailed and traditionally fit. Walnut, Maple Burl, Wenge, Poplar.
