I made this oak wall cabinet during my last term at the Centre for Fine Woodworking, studying with Brian Reid. My other craft is fibre (knitting and mending), and my mum trained as a weaver. The inspiration for this design comes from a Herringbone weave pattern. The woven surface decoration is achieved by shaping individual blocks and arranging them to give the impression of woven wood. The shape of the cabinet itself echos the herringbone weave (see if you can match it up!). The construction of the cabinet is deceptively complex, as rather than being 3 cabinets 'stuck together', they interlock with each other to form the final shape. It was a great lesson in accurate joinery; I used mortise and tenons and keyed mitres and lots of checking for squareness! The cabinet doors are installed with knife hinges, and handles which integrate into the woven decoration, which I think gives it not only a seamless appearance, but a sense of hidden fun.
