Natasha Courtney, Hanging on The Edge (CHESTS, CABINETS, SHELVING 2021)

This piece was a commission for a utility item with a pleasing aesthetic - to be a hallway focal point. Made from locally felled Oak, air dried for two years at my studio, and locally felled Banksia for the drawer. I chose a board with a gentle natural edge, not too gnarled. The aesthetic reflecting our natural environment of hills that come down to the sea. The coat pegs, made from Banksia, reflect the same 5 degree angle as the end of the upstand and the shelf. The curve of the shelf gently follows the grain pattern. The boards of the upstand and shelf are matched. The drawer box has hand cut dovetail joints, and is joined to the underside of the shelf on a sliding dovetail. The drawer itself is mitre joined with splines. The piece hangs on the wall with hand cut keyhole slots.
