Alex O'Brien, Hallway Table (Student Awards 2017)
The hallway table is made from Tasmanian blackwood, American white oak and veneered plywood. I made the table throughout the time frame of a year from September 2016 to August 2017 and created it so that my parents could use a handmade piece of furniture in their new house that they are moving too in 2018/19. I wanted to create an aesthetic piece of furniture that is both eye-catching as well as functional allowing it to be used for storing keys, glasses etc while remaining the centrepiece of the entrance to the home. I used traditional techniques including hand planing, shaping, sanding as well as modern techniques such as routing, thicknessing, laminating using a former made from a computer generated template and many more. I built the design to incorporate both curves and straight edges and made sure to take utmost care in all steps of production to ensure the longevity of the finished project and ensure it be made to the highest standard possible.
