Josh Thomson, Hallway Bench Seat (Student Awards 2019)

Looking up into the ceiling of an industrial warehouse, you wouldn’t expect to find timber which is able to be salvaged from those pesky white ants. That is exactly where I discovered enough of this beautiful Victorian ash to construct a hallway bench seat for my VCE Product Design and Technology class (completed on the 18th September 2019). All conversion techniques and joinery processes, including the creation of the cushioned seating area, were carried out using hand tools. The piece has already been displayed in an exhibition locally where it received the top award for its use of reclaimed timber and sustainable materials. Year 12, St Joseph's College Echuca, Vic.
