Matthew Conaglen, Hall Table (TABLES, CHAIRS & DESKS 2023)

This hall table is the first piece that I have made to my own design. The inspiration came from the gentle curve of the front rail and the grain flowing through that piece. The curve was transferred to the table-top and the long stretcher, and inspired the shorter curves on the side rails and stretchers. I hope that the drama of the figure in the table top is counterbalanced by the quiet grace and elegance of the undercarriage and the simplicity of the single drawer in the front. The table is made from American Walnut, with American Ash in the drawer. I am indebted to Stuart Faulkner from Heartwood Creative Woodworking, whose furniture-making classes I was lucky enough to be able to attend when he was in Sydney; his guidance on design principles and production techniques has been invaluable and I learnt a massive amount in bringing this concept to reality.
