Bubinga, Swiss pear, patinated brass pulls. 39” w x 37” h x 15 ¼” d There were a multitude of things I was thinking about when I began this piece: techniques I wanted to utilize, my ongoing exploration of historic furniture, a Sevres teapot with a gilded curved frame I have had an obsession with since I saw it at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The primary impetus was to include curves which ultimately took form as a pair of doors, and thus bent lamination rails. As the piece came to fruition, it became apparent how formal it was and therefore necessitated brass drop pulls. I created the pulls from crude brass stock and I patinated them in a cupric nitrate solution mixed with inert pear sawdust giving them their mottled appearance. The bubinga was challenging to work, though we got to know each other very well. Harmoniously pairing the curved center with the straight sections was both a challenge technically while mitering, and aesthetically in carrying a visual continuity between the curved and straight elements. All the veneers are shop sawn. This piece took roughly 960 hours of work and was completed from August 2023- February 2024.
