Tinyu Wong, Flame Box (BOWLS, BOXES 2021)
A seven compartment bandsaw box with three hidden drawers. It is my own design and measures 210 (W) x 310(H) x 128 (D). The theme of this bandsaw box is a threefold flame. I aim at maximum and intricate use of space and material whilst conveying a flowing lively feel. With Camphor Laurel for the main body, the sinuous design is enhanced by the rich colour and grain in the timber. The use of silky oak for the front creates neat fitting compartments, and gives a gentle contrast as well as suggesting the ever-upward movement of the flame utilizing the grain pattern in the silky oak. The decorative handles are swirls of camphor Laurel, imitating wisps of smoke and emphasize the feeling of movement. The elongated tops of the threefold flame and the spirals design is to recreate a visual effect depicting the extension and curling of the tongues of the flame. The wavy cut of the base enhances the moving nature of the flame. The faces of the hidden drawers are carved into the recipient's initials which function as handles, a step further in my design effort to fulfill the commissioner's wish of making this gift item personal. I spent more than seventy hours creating this item. About half of this time was sanding, and a fair part of that was hand sanding. The final stage was accomplished with ultra-fine sanding pads. This seven compartment flame box design including three hidden drawers is completed with natural oil and wax polish.
