For me this table represents family connections. Each individual piece of wood represents a person in my family; grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, siblings, children and grandchildren. The top of the table shows how these individual pieces join together to make my family whole. The wood and the woodcraft utilised to make this table also reflect family dynamics and heritage. I used red beech wood from a relative’s old woolshed. Each segment of the table is made up of six layers of steam bent veneers, five of red beech and one of walnut. All different in size and colour but all with similar DNA, strength and value. These laminated pieces were steam bent around three different forms, then dominoed and glued together to form something stronger than themselves. A table I hope will be passed on through generations of family to come.
