I am a Yr12 ITT student at Hillston Central School, and for my HSC major project I designed and created an Entertainment Unit from Tasmanian Oak timber. The main purpose of my Entertainment unit was to replace the one which we currently have at home in the loungeroom. The Entertainment unit was constructed through a wide range of detailed techniques and joinery, this includes lapped dovetails, bridle joints, mortise and tenons, and an inlay design. The lapped dovetails and bridle joins all allow for the contrast of timber end grain, and the inlay design allows for the contrast of two different toned timbers. When putting together the unit, I ensured that the grain matched up and showed continuation of grain direction. For example, the false drawer fronts, are from the same length of timber, which ensures that the grain continues in the same pattern and direction. The different grain directions and the use of Danish oil as a finish captured the unique grain structure and ensure that it stood out. Throughout the production of the major project as a student in a rural town, there were many limitations, including the weight, a set budget, sourcing of materials had to be from minimum 300km away, level of ability and time.
