Jake Brennan, Entertainment Unit (Student Awards 2019)
For my HSC timber project I designed an entertainment unit, as I wanted to make a large, eye catching, aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture. I designed the entertainment unit to hold large modern TVs – the cabinet is 1600mm wide which will comfortably house the largest model. My cabinet features a geometric marquetry pattern made out of Tasmanian blackwood and Tasmanian oak veneer, which covered the front face of the unit. I used half blind dovetail joints for the joinery of my cabinet carcase, which added to the technicality and the aesthetics of the overall design. I included four soft close drawers and two doors into my design to enhance the difficulty of the design. I selected dark timber boards, which featured many knots, as I believe they draw attention to the design and increase the aesthetics. Year 12, Freshwater Senior Campus. Teacher: Ben Percy
