While furniture designers often establish parallels between furniture and art, my pragmatic view is that it must also be practical. Furniture is an expression of who we are. The entertainment unit reflects my half Japanese heritage through the feature of hand-crafted Kumiko and refined, curved lines. Therefore, to provide a sense of my character, my HSC major project has refrained from genericism. I have worked to maintain the modern aesthetic and simplicity that appeals to a postmodern audience while including traditional elements. The potential to evolve an existing style into something new is a significant ambition of mine and drove my decision to design this unit. Through hundreds of hours of trial and error, the fully hand-cut, traditional Kumiko panel doors have complemented the raw, rich colour of Tasmanian Oak and the carefully laminated legs. I am extremely proud of this piece along with the skills that I have developed throughout the journey.
