For my 2023 HSC Major Work, I constructed an entertainment unit. The purpose of my project was to be the centerpiece of my lounge room. The unit will be able to hold remote controls, gaming consoles, as well as be the stand for the TV. I intended for my project to replace my current entertainment unit as it was outdated and did not meet the functionality of a larger sized, modern-day TV. I primarily used Tasmanian Blackwood, as I liked the colour and grain which matched the other furniture in the room. There are over 20 design and construction processes involved in the creation of my major work. The primary processes used were wide boarding, mitering, and housing joints. An additional design feature used to enhance the overall look of the project was the use of inlays. I used light coloured Pine as the inlays to contrast the dark Tasmanian Blackwood. I also added a recessed kickboard to add height to the timber piece. The entertainment unit is uniquely designed to include a raised top, two five panel doors and two five panel drawers. I elected to use a routered grooved edge to allow the opening and closing of the doors and drawers as I did not want to have hardware. This technique created the flush look I intended. I used 13 coats of Scandinavian oil to give the project the best possible shine and finish.
