Ebonised Tassie Oak Hardwax Oil Finish 3600 / 1165 / 750 The Eclipse Table garners its name from the deep natural black ebonished finish and sculptural portholes in the table base that dissolve into each other as you walk through the room. For this commission my intention was to create a piece that was sculptural, minimalist and strong while still being functional and inviting. The combination of the split top, portholes and tapers of the undercarriage all work in harmony to lighten the load of what could be a visually heavy piece. The dimensions and weight of the components meant that the piece needed to be modular for transportation. The undercarriage is held together with a series of cross lap joints which makes for a very strong self bracing unit that can be easily knocked down for transportation. The top is attached to the base using 5mm steel plates rebated into the legs and cross rails with slotted holes for seasonal expansion allowance. A home made iron acetate finish was used in combination with wine making tannins to get a tonally balanced colour.
