I made the Eclipse Table as part of the 'wood bending' term with Lou Fuller and David Haig at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson. The design started life inspired by a bar cart - the tiered circular tables and the laminated lippings are vestiges of this initial inspiration. In the midst of the design process, I sat in my vegetable garden and watched a lunar eclipse, which sparked the evolution of the final design with its two offset eclipsed 'moons'. The resolution of the design required me to pull out some old trigonometry tricks, so that the tabletops sit perfectly on three-way rails, the lower table slotting around the hexagonal tapered legs. I love the chatoyant grain of the Sapele and the way the light hits the veneered tabletops. I've spent a lot of time with this object, and even now there are new angles and silhouettes that appear from it.
