Eclipse Coffee Table, handmade from Northeastern American Black Walnut. The design of this coffee table is a response to the needs of the emerging post-pandemic lifestyle of the millennial generation or so-called “digital nomads”: mobility and minimal material possessions. This population is often pushed to compromise on their choices and look towards mass production and substandard manufacturing that advertises flat-packed furniture without providing quality. My aim was to propose a solution that minimizes the inconvenience of assembly and values sustainability. To actualize this goal, I decided to implement Japanese joinery as a technique and a philosophy. The Eclipse coffee table works as a self-supporting structure comprised of two round tops and three legs. On each leg, there are square cutouts that allow the tops to slide in and sit on their flat edges. This minimal approach has made it possible to assemble and disassemble this coffee table without using any screws or secondary material, hence highlighting the purity of the wood. This coffee table brings pleasing aesthetics to the room while valuing the importance of longevity and having a positive environmental impact through achieving more by consuming less.
