Inspired by Japanese temples and traditionally built timber structures , I wanted to express my appreciation for these things within ‘Dual’ chair. It is composed of lap joints, about half of which were cut by hand either because they involved three joining parts, or angles too difficult to manage on a machine. The seat is composed of shop sawn and commercial veneer, each of which stacked in opposing directions to create ample strength, and then vacuum pressed over a curved form. It was then hand shaped on the bandsaw and with a spokeshave to create the bevel underneath. After much consideration, I decided to intersect some of the joints with Ebony dowels not only to give strength but to create a further duality, an idea I wanted to carry throughout this piece.
