I have made a drinks cabinet using a combination of solid and veneered American White Oak timber. The cabinet is made with a knockdown fitting allowing the top to be removed on a set of sliding dovetails. The bench top draws the eye in with a herringbone patterned parquetry. I found building a knockdown fitting into a bench top, of which features parquetry, one of the hardest obstacles of my project. Working around the challenges of this, I built the parquetry bench top on plywood to reduce weight. The individual pieces are thin solid timber and I went on to add solid inserts into the plywood for the dovetail joint to be cut into, this ensured strength on the knockdown fitting. Overall, I am very pleased with how my project came together.
