Tinyu Wong, Dragon chasing the pearl (BOWLS, BOXES 2021)
A basic puzzle box with a pyrography dragon for decoration is one of my own designs. After trying my hands on making half a dozen or so few form bandsaw boxes, I was curious to find out the secret of making a puzzle box. It was a bit of an experiment really. I just picked up a random piece of pine to satrt with and ended up creating multiple compartments including a small hidden drawer. Just shows what potential a piece of wood can have. The pine was rather plain but the grain looked a little like a sky with wisps of clouds. After much research and contemplation, skitching, and doodling, I landed with the idea of a Chinese mythical dragon chasing a pearl in the sky. For the pearl would make a feature of the key opening of this puzzle box, and the dragon would move quite nicely across the otherwise featureless sky, resulting in a more interesting box top. Since the box only measures 190(w) x 70 (H) x 105 (D), I used the finest pyrography tip was available, and with very precise execution, I managed to deliver this complex image of a dragon riding the clouds to chase a fiery pearl. This Dragon box was completed with natural oil and wax polish.
