The Djembe Table, crafted in 2024, is a striking piece that draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of the Djembe Drum. Made from rustic walnut, the table measures 96x44 inches, showcasing the natural beauty and depth of the wood. Using CNC carving techniques, I’ve meticulously shaped the table legs to borrow from the curves and lines of the traditional African drum. A distinctive feature of the table is what I call "the beauty mark," a design element inspired by the practice of "Njam," a form of gum beautification through tattooing. This mark on the table’s leg is a nod to this cultural tradition, adding a unique and personal touch. Instead of sanding away the milling marks left by the CNC, I chose to leave them intact, creating a two toned textured surface that invites a tactile experience for those who dare to touch. The Djembe Table is not just a functional piece of furniture; it’s a celebration of indigenous artistry and modern design.
