As both a functional and decorative object, the Cupric Room Divider addresses my generation’s necessarily transient lifestyle. It is an easily moved object, designed to augment a range of small spaces. The piece features European Beech, chosen for it's smooth texture and small grain structure, painted with black milk paint – burnished and buffed back to provide a slightly lived in feel. The screens are a fine copper mesh that has been torched to create various colours through oxidation. Due to the different radii of the curved face of the posts/rails and the curved joint, it was essential to shape the rails by hand. For those looking closely, there is also the small easter egg at the top of the posts – a small hand carved surface to remind the viewer that hand work is still essential in craft. I continue to explore the use of textiles/woven materials in my work to consider the roles of gender and social capital in craft and the making of things. Dimensions: Three panels, hinged to each other - each panel is 1800mm (h) x 450mm (w) x 100mm (d)
