Working with timber is an ongoing and growing passion. Having spent many years as builder I transitioned to mentoring woodworking a few years ago, which in turn free up time to spend exploring the textures and colours of grains. At first this was in small furniture pieces, but quickly progressed to more sculptural pieces. By manipulating various parameters different angles of grain are exposed, catching and reflecting light in an array of patterns from a single piece of stock timber. Crest consists of three types of timber; Vitex, Old Growth Kauri (early 1900s) and Black Miro (milled from swamp timber). As the piece progresses, end grain transitions into long grain giving the Kauri an almost gold like sparkle. And while the piece look quite delicate, the relative densities of the timber use resulted in a robust sculpture, even at its thinnest point.
