This piece is the third in a series of sculptural wall shelves, and one of four unique sculptures created in 2022. Each sculpture develops the concept, incorporating increasingly technical shapes and joinery techniques. The sculpture was commissioned by the architect of a newly built Sydney house, and custom built for the entrance staircase of the home. The timber is laminated Southern Mountain Ash, some ebonised, chosen to create a contrast with the heavy timber and polished stone staircase, and the patinated copper entrance door. Three copper shelves add a straight line element into the work. The owner is invited to choose very special and meaningful objects to display on the shelves, or to leave them empty. The final concept is intended to create a feeling of lightness and movement from all angles. The curves of the sculpture sit in harmony with the natural sunlight found in the staircase and the straight architectural lines found the surroundings, to create a contrast of shapes and shadows.
