This contemporary wooden geared grandfather clock was inspired by Will Matthysens custom work. The project utilises radial segments of American Walnut and Canadian Rock Maple to create dimensionally stable gears to ensure the function of the clock in all conditions. The back panel is made from reclaimed NSW Blackbutt using tongue and groove and housing joins to allow for the cross-grain expansion of this timber. Tasmanian Blackwood is used in the gear housing and case featuring angled mortise and tenon joins with tapped holes allowing for the deconstructing of the mechanism for maintenance. The glass door utilises a concealed barrel hinge to create a sleek hidden design to access the inner components. To keep accurate time, the pendulum and link has a brass turnbuckle and threaded brass ‘bullet’ at the bottom of the pendulum bob to adjust the length and therefore period of the pendulum. This project (1300x540x350mm) was complete for a final HSC Major work showcasing a wide range of functional and aesthetic processes.
