Woodworking is, above all, a heritage that links our present day with the foundation of our culture. In my work, which aims to be contemporary and individual, there is a strong influence from past periods when craftspeople made furniture as a long-lasting art expression. The submitted piece is a revisit of a slant-front cabinet similar in construction to those of the 18th Century, yet approached from my personal background and taste. While most of the joinery is traditional (hand-cut dovetails and mortise-and-tenon), the veneer choice is rather contemporary: spalted beech. The front is open to reveal an uncluttered, minimal space to read, write or study without distractions. One of the drawers includes a locked compartment with a spring-loaded secret drawer similar to those found in period pieces. I made the mechanism in brass and steel, designed by Galt Designs. As one of my efforts to collect and nurture the woodworking traditions, the whole build has been thoroughly documented through video and photography to be shared with everyone.
