Noah Bradford, Contemporary Curved Desk (STUDENT 2021)

I have designed and built a Contemporary Curved Desk made from American Black Walnut contrasted with American Rock Maple inlays and drawers. The design concept for my desk came from my desire to experiment with a variety of different techniques for bending and curving timber. These techniques in my project include kerfing, laminating, cutting, and shaping. In addition to the curves, I have included a variety of skills using joints such as a stopped dovetail housing joints and rebate joints as well as designing my own inlay. Some of the challenges involved with this project include the project being constructed during my HSC school year with a full study load of subjects, as well has having limited access to tools and equipment due to lockdown. The most challenging parts of constructing the project was shaping the curved drawer sides to be able to fit into the kerfed encasement and keeping such a wide curve, square and consistent for my kerfed encasement which makes its way right around the project. Overall, my project has a huge variety of different skills and technique which showcase a very elegant and contemporary desk design executed to an extremely high standard.
